Overnight Shootings Leave 2 Dead, 5 Wounded
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two men were killed and at least five more were injured in overnight shootings in the city.
Joshua Hudgins, 34, was still wearing his apron when he was shot outside Alice's Bar-B-Que, 65 E. 43rd St., around 9 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said. He was later pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Hudgins was standing outside Alice's, where he worked for "over 10 years,'' taking a smoke break when a gray vehicle rolled past and someone inside fired shots. Hudgins was struck in the chest, a Wentworth District police lieutenant said. Police do not believe he was the intended target.
The three were standing on a porch about 2:35 a.m. when a dark-colored vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire, police said. Dante Lawrence, 30, was killed.
While Fire Media Affairs spokesman Kevin MacGregor said one of the other victims was a child, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said the two wounded survivors were a 34-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, who were in serious and good condition, respectively.
The shooting may have been gang-related, police said.
Also overnight, a 14-year-old boy was shot and wounded in a vacant lot in the West Woodlawn neighborhood.
The boy was walking with another male in the lot on the 6000 block of South Prairie Avenue when a male gunman opened fire at 10:48 p.m., police said.
He was shot in the neck and suffered a graze wound to the face, police said. Friends took the boy to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital where he remained in serious condition early Wednesday.
The city's West Side was also hit by violence. Two men were shot and wounded in a drive-by incident around 12:42 a.m. in the 2900 block of West Flournoy Street, police said.
One man, 24, was shot in the lower back and shoulder, while an 18-year-old man was shot in the foot, police said.
Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they are listed in good condition early Wednesday, police said.
No one was in custody in any of the shootings Wednesday morning.
