Overnight Shootings In Chicago Leave 1 Dead, 6 Wounded
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Gunfire left one man dead and another wounded just after midnight in the South Shore neighborhood, and five others were wounded across the city in the overnight hours.
The shooting happened at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday in the 7500 block of South Kingston Avenue. The men, ages 39 and 59 were standing on the sidewalk when they were shot.
The younger man – identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as L.C. Robinson III of the 100 block of East 150th Street in Harvey – was shot in the face and was taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The 59-year-old was driven by a friend to South Shore Hospital, where he was listed in good condition with a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. The surviving man told police that the two heard the gunfire, but did not see where the shots were coming from.
In other overnight incidents:
• A man was shot in the back Tuesday night in the 6600 block of North Ashland Avenue, between North Shore and Albion avenues, in the Rogers Park neighborhood. The 19-year-old victim was standing in a gangway when he heard gunfire and felt pain around 10:30 a.m.
He was taken in serious condition to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston with a gunshot wound to the back, according to police.
While Ashland Avenue is a busy four-lane thoroughfare through most of the city, between Pratt Boulevard and Devon Avenue it is a two-lane side street lined with multi-unit apartment buildings. The area has been known for years for gang activity.
• Around 11:10 p.m., a 21-year-old man was shot and wounded while he was walking in the 8900 block of South Escanaba Avenue, in the South Chicago neighborhood. He was walking down the street when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot him, police said.
The man suffered gunshot wounds to the face and arm. He was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in stable condition.
• Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, a man of an unknown age was shot in both legs in the Little Village neighborhood.
The man, whose age was not immediately available, was shot about 1:02 a.m. in the 2400 block of South Sawyer Avenue, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in an unknown condition, police said.
• At 2:15 a.m., two men were left in critical condition when they were shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
The men were shot about 2:15 a.m. in the 5300 block of South Wolcott Avenue, according to Chicago Police News Affairs.
A 25-year-old man was shot multiple times in the body, and a 24-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the back, News Affairs said.
A friend dropped both men off at Holy Cross Hospital, police said.
No arrests had been reported in any of the cases as of 10 a.m. Wednesday.
