Outside Forensic Expert To Examine NIU Remains

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- Newsradio 780 has learned that investigators looking into the case of NIU student Toni Keller have asked a forensic anthropologist in Indianapolis to examine the remains found in a DeKalb park.

The spokeswoman for the Keller family, Mary Tarling, says all signs point to the conclusion that the burned remains are those of the 18-year-old freshman.

"We're going on that assumption," she says, "because we really don't have a choice."

"We're trying to hold together. We're trying to be patient. We're trying to wait for information and answers. That takes time. Obviously they can't come fast enough for us. But we are trying to be patient, to the best of our ability."

Tarling says the family - and Toni Keller's classmates - need closure.

"Everyone could use some closure, even if it's not what you want to hear. Sometimes that's better than not knowing."

Tarling says she is aware that an Indianapolis forensic anthropologist has been working on the case to help authorities in DeKalb.
