Oswego Couple Remembers Son Who Died When Plane Hit WTC
OSWEGO (CBS) -- The village of Oswego commemorated the 9/11 anniversary on Sunday with a special contribution from two parents who feel the loss of the attacks every day.
As CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports, the parents of Jeffrey Collman want their son's kindness and humanity to be remembered.
On the day Oswego remembered the 9/11 attacks, Dwayne Collman wanted to be there, so that his son's sacrifice will be remembered.
"Nobody should ever forget this day," he said.
Jeffrey collman was a flight attendant aboard American Airlines Flight 11, the first airliner that struck the World Trade Center.
The names of all 2,996 victims were read outside an Oswego church, and Dwayne Collman read the names of flight 11 crew members, including his son.
"He's just a missing part of our life. We have other kids and we love them a whole lot, but that doesn't make up for one that's missing," his mother, Kay Collman, said.
Remembering the missing was the theme of the day. Along Washington Street in the center of town, volunteers mounted a display of almost 3,000 pairs of shoes – one for each victim of the attacks.
"Seeing all these empty shoes really brings home the understanding of how many lives were so needlessly lost that day for everybody," Yorkville resident John Etheridge said.
Jeffrey Collman was a native of Yorkville. He loved tennis almost as much as he loved air travel. Next spring, Yorkville will name a tennis court in his honor.
