Toddler Alexandra Martinez Dies After Display Falls On Her In Store At Orland Square Mall
ORLAND PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- A 2-year-old girl is dead after a display fell on her inside of an Akira store in the Orland Square Mall Tuesday afternoon.
As CBS 2's Tara Molina reported Tuesday night, the Orland Fire Protection District said the girl was in the store with her aunt when a display structure – possibly a shelving unit – fell on her and caused a serious head injury.
There were numerous calls about a large metal object falling on a baby at the Akira in the mall.
A doctor and nurse happened to be nearby in the mall and provided medical assistance while 911 was called.
Orland Park police arrived at the store shortly before 2 p.m. They were joined by paramedics in performing medical treatment on the toddler, police said.
But the girl was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was later pronounced dead, police said. She has been identified as 2-year-old Alexandra Martinez, of south suburban Harvey.
Orland Square Mall released a statement Tuesday night saying, "Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the child," and referring further questions to police and Akira.
Orland Park police detectives were investigating, but believed the girl's death to be an accident.
