Teen Fatally Shot At Orland Park Mall, Police Searching For Suspect
CHICAGO (CBS) -- One person was shot and killed and another person was shot and injured at a mall in Orland Park Monday night, police say.
Orland Park police responded to a call that multiple people were shot around 6:45 p.m. at the Orland Square Mall food court and arrived to find one 19-year-old man shot in the chest. Police do not know how many shots were fired.
Police believe the offender fled the area heading east, but they searched the entire mall store by store as a precaution while mall goers sheltered in place. Police are still searching for the shooter.
"We believe this to be an isolated incident. We believe based on the information we have currently -- this is an evolving investigation -- that these individuals knew each other," Orland Park Deputy Chief Joseph Mitchell said.
According to police a second victim suffered a graze wound but was not involved. The injuries were not life threatening, and the person was transported to a hospital.
The shooter is described as a black male about 6 feet one inch tall wearing dark clothing and blue jeans.
People at the Five Guys restaurant nearby were told to lock the doors and shelter inside.
"This is an isolated incident. This mall is one of the safest malls in the Chicagoland area," Mitchell said.
Orland Square Mall is located at 288 Orland Square Drive. The mall is is currently closed.
Families were asked to wait for loved ones inside the mall at a nearby Art Van Furniture store to reunite.
