One-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shot In Riverdale
CHICAGO (CBS) – A one-year-old boy was shot in the head Thursday in the south suburbs.
The child was shot inside a 3rd floor apartment, near the East 100th block of 136th Street, in Riverdale. Sources said he was shot in the head by his 11-year-old cousin, who was playing with a gun. The son's mother was home, but was unaware of the gun, CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports.
Police responded to report of a child shot around 11:30 a.m., Thursday. The toddler suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and was transported to Christ Hospital, in Oak Lawn, where he remains in critical condition.
"They are like family," said neighbor, Andrew Robinson, who lives in the 2nd floor of the apartment. "Can't get much closer. Everybody just pray for him."
The family members call the boy 'little Lennox,' Robinson said.
Michelle Baker, neighbor, heard the shot around 11 a.m. Thursday morning.
"I thought it was kids outside," Baker said. "I heard the neighbor scream, 'my baby got shot in the head.'"
Loretta Kennedy, from the neighborhood, arrived at the scene before paramedics.
"The baby was not moving," Kennedy said. "They kept shaking him saying don't die…I can only pray."
Relatives have no idea where the gun came from or who it belongs to, said the aunt of the baby. Three children, a 16-year old, a 13-year old and an 11-year old were playing with the gun, when it went off. Details on this story are still developing.
A firearm was recovered from the scene. All parties involved are currently being interviewed by the Detective Division. All are cooperating in the investigation.
