One Night, Nine Vehicle Break-Ins
ORLAND PARK, Ill. (STMW) - Nine vehicles were broken into and several items were stolen from them within three hours Wednesday evening in southwest suburban Orland Park.
It happened between 6:30 and 9 p.m. in parking lots of Orland Park businesses around the 15700 block of Harlem Avenue, police said.
Two of the vehicles were parked at Meijer's, 15701 S. 71st. Court; two were at Outback Steakhouse, 15608 Harlem Ave.; and five were in the parking lot of the vacated Ginger Asian Bistro, 15700 S. Harlem Ave.
Orland Park Police Cmdr. John Keating said those likely were vehicles of customers of Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurants next door.
Police said witnesses reported seeing three women running southwest from the bistro's parking lot. Police responded but were not able to locate women matching the descriptions. Keating said police will step up patrols in the area.
Purses, cell phones and GPS units were among the items stolen from the vehicles. Windows were smashed to gain entry into several of the vehicles, Keating said.
"We encourage people to take items of value out of view from people passing by their cars," Keating said. "They'll be less likely to try to enter it. It only takes a few seconds to smash and grab the items."
