One Dead, One Rescued In Kayak Accident On Fox River
GENEVA, Ill. -- One man died in a kayak accident on the Fox River in Geneva, water rescue officials confirmed on site Saturday evening, the Aurora Beacon-News is reporting.
Geneva Fire Lt. Ted Sciaky said a kayak carrying two young men was too close to the Fox River dam near Route 38 and Water Street when the kayak turned sideways. Rushing water then pushed the kayak over the dam, he said.
The two young men in the kayak were plunged into the river, Sciaky said. One young man was ejected from the kayak and the other young man was stuck in the kayak.
With the help of two bystanders, one of the victims was pulled out of the Fox River and transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva good condition.
Geneva Fire Department's water rescue team was dispatched at 4:27 p.m. to the scene.
"The second victim because of his entanglement with the kayak and the hydraulic boil of the dam was unable to get free," he said.
The team recovered the young man's body from the Fox River at about 6 p.m. Saturday.
Six people in total were traveling down the Fox River during the kayak trip, Sciaky said. Sciaky said he believed the young men were about 25 years old and were visiting from Bloomington, Ill.
The Geneva Fire Department, Batavia Fire Department and St. Charles Fire Department were on scene Saturday.
