One Dead After Car Ruptures Gas Line In Warrenville
CHICAGO (STMW) -- It will take an investigation by the DuPage County Coroner's office to confirm that just one person died in a car that was engulfed in flames after it struck a gas line in west suburban Warrenville early Sunday.
Officers responded at 2:52 a.m. to the report of a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Diehl and Winfield roads, according to a release from Warrenville Police.
That vehicle struck and ripped open an above ground gas line as it left the roadway before being consumed by flames, the release said.
No one had been transported to the hospital from the scene and no rescues were able to be made from the engulfed vehicle, according to a Warrenville Fire Protection District firefighter.
Police later Sunday morning said it appeared that there was one fatality, and the name of that victim was being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Because of the extreme heat generated by the fire though, it will be necessary for the DuPage County Coroner's office to complete their investigation before confirming the vehicle was occupied by just one person, police said.
NICOR personnel worked to shutoff the gas line, according to the release.
Diehl Road remained closed between Raymond Drive and Winfield roads as of 5 a.m., the firefighter said.
