One Cubs Fan Lived To Witness Two World Series

CHICAGO (CBS) – Faithful Cubs fans always knew this day would come.

But during years of heartbreak, they sometimes needed a hopeful reminder.

"Sure as God made green apples, someday the Chicago Cubs are going to be in the World Series," Harry Caray said.

And sure enough, fans remembered Harry Caray's green apples, and Thursday they left them at his gravestone in Des Plaines.

While many could not image the Cubs making it to the World Series, CBS 2 met with one fan who saw it twice in one lifetime.

CBS 2's Vince Gerasole has a tale of two series.

"They are the best team in baseball, and they are going to be the best for a long time."

86-year-old Ronny Wolff has witnessed a pair of historic moments.

"I've accomplished something seeing them play in two World Series," Wolff said. "Which I have tried to do for quite a while."

The 1945 World Series, Game 7, Wrigley – Wolff saw it all.

"I was sitting right back here behind home plate," Wolff said. "I wish I had the ticket, it would be worth a lot of money."

Wolff also remembers the 1945 loss.

"I did not go away happy, but I was glad to be there," Wolff said.

But what a difference 71 years can make. Wolff attended Game 9 at Wrigley last week.

"Well it was one to nothing," Wolff said. "Not fun to watch."

And he often held his breath during Game 7.

"None of it looked good when they tied up the score," Wolff said. "I had visions of a goat."

"The batter was up and the umpire called a perfect strike a ball…I was furious."

Wolff is not furious anymore as the Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians in 10 innings. A win most of us have been waiting for, for a lifetime, but for Wolff, a win he has been waiting for since the Cubs' 1945 loss.

"Put that in your pipe and smoke it!" Wolff said.
