On Facebook, Sanders Wins In A Landslide In Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- If Americans elected their president based on Facebook likes, rather than actual votes, Bernie Sanders would in Chicago in a landslide.
That's the result of an ambitious analysis by the website FiveThirtyEight, which looked at the race through the prism of social media nationwide.
Sanders wins every Chicago zip code, but one.
GOP front-runner Donald Trump is most popular in the more conservative 60656 zip, which includes the Norwood Park neighborhood.
Trump tops Sanders there with 32 percent of the Facebook likes, compared with 28 percent for Sanders.
Ben Carson comes in third with 14 percent.
Hillary Clinton takes fourth with 10 percent.
In fact, Clinton does poorly just about everywhere, trailing Sanders by wide margins in many zips.
This despite the fact that Clinton has strong ties to the Chicago area.
Trump also enjoys strong support on the South Side, especially in places like the Hegewisch neighborhood. Sanders still beats Trump there, but by a narrow margin of 29 percent of Facebook likes, compared to 27 percent for Trump.
Sanders' popularity is especially strong in zips that include university students.
In the 60660 zip, which includes Loyola University:
Sanders: 57 percent
Clinton: 27 percent
Trump: 7 percent
Over in 60607, which includes the University of Illinois-Chicago
Sanders: 50 percent
Clinton: 19 percent
Trump: 12 percent
Down in Hyde Park (60637) at the University of Chicago:
Sanders: 53 percent
Clinton: 20 percent
Trump: 10 percent
Sanders' biggest support comes from the Logan Square neighborhood (60647), where he enjoys a whopping 69 percent of Facebook likes.
Of course, Facebook is far from a representative sample of the American electorate.
It's hardly an accurate predictor of the election's outcome, but it is interesting nonetheless to assess where candidates are most popular in the social media space.
As FiveThirtyEight notes, Facebook users are disproportionately young, low-income and female.
