Officers Shoot Man Who Pointed Gun During Chase

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A police officer shot and wounded a man who allegedly pulled a gun on them during a foot chase Thursday evening in the south side Fuller Park neighborhood.

It was sunset when two tactical officers on foot spotted to men exchanging something -- possibly drugs -- in an alley near 43rd Street and Princeton Avenue. Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the officers caught one man quickly but had to chase after the other.

"As he turned into a vacant lot, he pulls out a silver handgun," Camden said. "The officers are chasing him. There's an exchange of gunfire."

Although one of the officers wounded the man in the leg, he kept running, but Camden said that officers found him attempting to hide a few minutes later.

Paramedics transported the suspect under police guard to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County; the leg wound is said not to be life-threatening. No one else was hurt in the exchange.

Area Central detectives and the Independent Police Review Agency are investigating.
