CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago police officers shot and killed a man who they say lunged at them with a knife Friday in the Little Village neighborhood.

Shortly after 2 a.m., a woman called police from the Albany Terrace Apartments senior building in the 3000 block of West 21st Place, asking for help with her boyfriend who was armed with a knife. Police arrived on the 6th floor of the Chicago Housing Authority building minutes later.

Police said, when officers knocked on an apartment door, they were confronted by a man who pulled out a knife and lunged at them.

The officers fired their weapons, hitting the man, identified as 58-year-old Timothy Glaze of Chicago several times. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Louis Withers Lives on the 6th floor and said he was awakened by the sound of police shouting.

"Looked out the window, I saw police all over the place," he said. "I heard the police say, 'Stop! Don't move!' A few seconds later, I heard the gunshots."

Withers said he couldn't see anything when he looked through his apartment's peephole, so he opened the door, and he saw a bullet on the floor.

Cook County Court records show Glaze has a history of domestic violence-related cases dated back to 2006.

A 2011 domestic battery case was followed by an order of protection.

In June 2022, court records show he was arrested again for domestic battery.

In June 2024, he was charged with violating an order of protection. According to court records, another order of protection was granted and that case was still active on Friday, with a status hearing scheduled for next month.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has opened an investigation into the shooting. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.
