Off-Duty Sheriff's Officer Exchanges Shots With Robbers
CHICAGO (STMW) -- An off-duty Cook County Jail investigator was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday night, then exchanged gunfire with the robbers in the Roscoe Village neighborhood on the North Side.
The officer, a man, was approached by two males wearing masks about 11:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of West Belmont, police said.
The males announced a robbery and one of them fired a weapon at the officer, police said. The officer returned fire, but as of about 1 a.m. Thursday no injuries had been reported.
"Our officer appears to be okay to which we are grateful," Cook County sheriff's spokeswoman Sophia Ansari said.
The robbers ran away with the officer's cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
No one has been taken into custody in connection with the robbery as authorities investigate.
