Off-Duty Correctional Officer Shot In Little Village Alley
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An off-duty Cook County sheriff's correctional officer was shot in an alley in the Little Village neighborhood Monday night.
The 37-year-old officer was returning home from work around 10:30 p.m., still wearing his uniform, standing in the alley behind his mother's home in the 2800 block of South Tripp Avenue, when someone in a minivan opened fire on him, police said.
The officer was shot in the leg, and he was rushed to the trauma center at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was treated and released.
Gladys Badillo heard the shots, and saw the commotion when police arrived and swarmed the area.
"I heard three or four shots," she said.
The officer's mother, who didn't want to be identified, said it was terrifying.
"I see my son on the floor. I run to my son. I hold on to my son," she said.
She was too distraught to talk about her son, so Badillo spoke about the victim.
"He is a good guy," she said. "I've known him since he was a little boy. He played with my son."
No one was in custody early Tuesday. Police believe the gunman fled the scene in a dark-colored minivan.
Area Central Detectives were investigating.
