Of Playoffs, QBs and Fish Eggs
Welcome to the 2010 MLB postseason in August.
By this I do not mean "This series will have a playoff feel to it," because I have no idea what kind of feel it will have. Nor will I tell you it is a "playoff atmosphere," since I'm not quite sure what that means, short of it being cold, tense and loud.
But the Sox season could end here.
Probably won't, really, since a lone victory in the three games is enough to keep them viable. And rugged John Danks takes the mound in Minneapolis tonight. We'll preview things this afternoon, bringing you the lineup as soon as Ozzie posts it in the clubhouse, and getting a live look-in from the Score's Joe Cowley.
Caleb Hanie says he's not worried about losing his job as the Bears #2 quarterback, but he should be. Todd Collins or another well-traveled old guy is probably not coming here to sit behind Hanie on the depth chart, or to be just a camp arm.
In truth, they could use two more QBs, since Dan LeFevour doesn't even appear qualified to throw during drills. And the liklihood of Jay Cutler missing a game or more due to injury is higher than in years past, because of the deeper drops and questionable blocking.
Mike Martz wanted Mark Bulger weeks ago, but Jay Cutler didn't (Cutler's weak rationale involved "everybody starting from the same point" in learning the new system). Cutler won that time, but there may be a veteran backup here regardless who knows the plays better than he does.
This minor flap over the inclusion of caviar on the Cubs' pregame spread at Wrigley is silly. Stop reaching for comparisons to Marie Antoinette and realize that not all "caviar" is priceless sturgeon roe of the Beluga, Sevruga or Osetra varieties. Any jamoke can look two shelves above the tuna cans at Jewel and grab a $5 jar of perfectly tasty caviar -- whitefish and black lumpfish are commonly available, and the average joes who eat at the neighborhood sushi joint once a week enjoy tobiko (flying-fish roe) and ikura (salmon eggs) that are about as exotic as chicken nuggets.
If it was indeed priceless sturgeon roe, however, I do reserve the right to raise an eyebrow.
