Oak Park Cop Bitten By HIV-Positive Man
OAK PARK (CBS) -- An Oak Park police officer is OK after being bitten by an HIV-positive prisoner during post-arrest processing.
Deputy Chief Anthony Ambrose said the officer was processing Javier Gonzales Flores, 36, of 432 S. Maple Ave., on a felony retail theft charge at 5:45 p.m. Nov. 18, when he became "uncooperative and combative."
During a struggle Flores allegedly bit the officer, who was immediately transported to the hospital for treatment.
"He was examined by doctors and it appears the officer is fine," said Ambrose. "We will continue to monitor him."
Ambrose said Flores was arrested at 2:10 p.m. and charged with retail theft at the Old Navy Store, 418 N. Harlem Ave. That charge was upgraded due to a prior conviction.
"He didn't steal much. He had prior convictions," said Ambrose.
Flores, who had reportedly told police he was HIV-positive during an earlier interview, was also charged with felony aggravated battery of a police officer and criminal transmission of HIV.
He was ordered held without bond.
Flores was last arrested by Oak Park police on Oct. 14, 2010, also for retail theft.
