NU's Ellis, Illini's Scheelhaase Take Home Big Ten Honors For Week 1 Efforts
(CBS) -- Northwestern linebacker Collin Ellis and Illinois Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase both received awards for their efforts in Week 1 of the college football season.
Ellis was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after returning two interceptions for touchdowns in a 44-31 win over California. The linebacker is the first player in school history to have two interception returns in the same game. He also finished with four tackles, including one for loss.
Scheelhaase was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after he threw for a career-high 416 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-34 win over Southern Illinois. This marks the second time he has been given the honor, winning as a freshman on Nov. 1, 2010.
Penn State kicker Luke Fickens was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week and Nittany Lion freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg was the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
