Maria Kordas is a hospital operation nursing supervisor at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. She directs, supervises and coordinates hospital and nursing activities by assuming responsibility over the administrative personnel during evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts.
Kordas holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice, a Registered Nurse certification and a Master of Science in nursing, and she is an adult-geriatric acute care nurse practitioner, Nurse Executive Advanced and Certified Medical Surgical Registered Nurse. What are the scope and responsibilities of your current role?
"My position includes facilitating for the provision of quality care to the patient in the appropriate environment by overseeing the bed coordinator and collaborating with the physicians and other healthcare disciplines to assure optimal patient care."
What is your favorite part of your daily duties?
"To talk to the patients, to find out how to increase the patients' satisfaction and talk to the nurses to engage them."
Do you feel your education prepared you for your current role?
"Definitely. The combination of my education, which is clinical and administration, is giving me opportunity to explore what I learned in school to practice in the healthcare field. Not that many people have an opportunity to complete clinical with administration with a doctoral degree in nursing. It is unique; however, it is a future."
Do you have any advice for people who desire to pursue a similar career?
"Never give up on your professional dreams. It feels great to have the highest nursing education. You have to remember: it is amazing to achieve the highest nursing education; however, my job is to make the difference in patients' care as well as to be the best nursing model for the younger generation of nurses."
