Nuns Without Heat Have Faith Someone Will Help

(CBS) -- A fraternity of sisters called to Chicago's Austin neighborhood to help is in need of help themselves.

As CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports, the nuns are freezing.

Most of the sisters of Fraternite Notre Dame come to Chicago's Austin neighborhood by way of France.

"We love this neighborhood, but it's a neighborhood that needs a lot of help," Sister Marie Valerie says.

The sisters feed 200 homeless people each day and make home visits to bedridden patients.

They have boiler problems -- estimated to cost $40,000 to repair -- right as Chicago descended into historic temperature lows. A thermometer on Thursday said the inside of their home was 32 degrees. Replacing the boilers outright would be even more expensive, at approximately $200,000.

"We have faith in God," Sister Marie Valerie says.

With temperatures expected to dip below zero, the eight nuns were huddled around four small electric heaters.

Sister Marie Valerie can be reached at SainteMFaustine@aol.com, or Fraternite Notre Dame can be reached at 773-261-0101, or at 502 N. Central Av., Chicago, IL, 60644. The church's email is info@fraternitenotredame.org
