'Nuns On The Bus' To Urge Chicagoans To Vote
Podcast
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A national bus tour of nuns was set to make an appearance at the Lincoln Park branch of the Chicago Public Library on Tuesday, to encourage Chicagoans to vote in the midterm elections next week.
WBBM Newsradio's Mariam Sobh reports, for the last three years, the "Nuns on the Bus" tour has been held to speak with folks across the county on a variety of issues.
Sister Simone Campbell said they focused on immigration last year, and this year they want people to stand up and vote.
"It's hard in the face of big money, and all the negative ads," she said. "We've met so many people around the country who are depressed by that, and feel disengaged from the political reality."
Campbell said the U.S. values democracy, and that's what it will take for people to have their voices heard.
"We don't have to talk to our representatives, we don't have to get our senators and members of the House to do something, we the people can use our power to make a difference," she said.
The nuns came through Chicago last month for a voter registration drive with Gov. Pat Quinn.
