'Nun On The Run' Robbery Suspect Arrested
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A young man who posed as an old nun when he robbed a Palos Heights bank has been arrested, authorities said.
Lyndon Germel Wesley, 28, is the second of two so-called "nuns-on-the-run" robbers to be caught, authorities said.
His alleged accomplice and girlfriend, Navahcia Edwards, was arrested a month after a May 2011 heist at a TCF Bank branch in Palos Heights.
The pair are accused of donning nuns' habits and wearing old lady masks while stealing $120,000 in cash at gunpoint.
Edwards had previously worked as a teller at the bank, while Wesley opened a safety deposit box at the branch as part of his preparation for the heist, according to a federal criminal complaint.
Wesley cased the bank earlier on the day of the robbery, and is seen on surveillance video raising his leg to the height of the counter, apparently in an attempt to see if he could later jump over it. He also asked tellers questions such as, "Just the two of you working today?" according to the complaint.
The stick-up was captured on video, and evidence shows Edwards bought the nun costumes and zip-ties used in the robbery with her credit cards, authorities said. Her decision to rob three vaults but leave a fourth containing only coins untouched tipped off investigators that it was an inside job, authorities said.
Wesley, of Markham, was arrested early Wednesday and was later ordered held until at least Friday by Magistrate Judge Michael Mason.
Edwards, who last month pleaded guilty to embezzling $23,000 from a Chase Bank branch where she previously worked in Country Club Hills, also remains in custody.
