Schapiro urged everyone to pause for a moment to think about what has been learned from the scandal.

"Our thoughts are with those victims, as they are with victims of abuse everywhere. Our hearts go out to them and to their families," Schapiro wrote.

He also offered up some avenues for reporting trouble:

• If any member or members of the Northwestern community believe a crime has been committed, they should call university police at (847) 491-3456 or (312) 503-3456.

• If they believe sexual harassment has occurred, they should contact the Sexual Harassment Prevention Office at (847) 491-3745, or the Center for Awareness, Response and Education at (847) 491-2146.

• If they believe a child has been abused, they should contact the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, at (800) 25-ABUSE.

• If they believe someone has committed an ethical violation, they should contact the Northwestern ethics hotline at (855) 294-3454.

"We want to be as vigilant as possible, and we will not condone illegal or unethical actions by any member of the University community, regardless of his or her position," Schapiro wrote.

At Penn State, former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky stands charged with sexually abusing numerous young boys, and the fallout from the allegations and the alleged cover-up by school officials has cost Head Coach Joe Paterno and university President Graham Spanier their jobs.
