Notre Dame Defeats Delaware State 93-69
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Four players scored in double figures Friday night as Notre Dame stayed unbeaten with a 93-69 victory over Delaware State.
The Irish (4-0) were led by Scott Martin's 23, while Jack Cooley recorded a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds. Alex Dragicevich added 18 points and Jerian Grant 17.
Tahj Tate led the Hornets (1-2) with 29.
Notre Dame outrebounded Delaware State 46-24.
The Irish played without starting guards Eric Atkins and Joey Brooks, both of whom had flulike symptoms.
Tate, Delaware State's leading scorer with an 18.5 average coming into the game, proved it was no fluke. He nailed his first three shots, two of them 3-pointers, and scored 13 of Delaware State's first 15 points.
But Grant began to deny him the ball, and that forced the rest of the Hornets to shoot.
The Irish at one point trailed 15-11 but got back into the game with defense, rebounding and free throws.
Martin's 3-pointer with 13:42 left began a 23-3 run that established a 33-18 edge. A free throw by Delaware State's Kendall Gray ended that streak, but the damage was done. Notre Dame led at halftime 43-30.
The Hornets started the second half on a 10-3 tear, cutting their deficit to 46-40 and forcing Notre Dame to call a quick timeout with 16:44 remaining.
Notre Dame put together a 13-5 run to establish a 59-45 edge as Grant began to heat up from beyond the 3-point arc. The Irish led 64-49 with 11:58 to play and coasted from there.
