Northwestern, Notre Dame To Renew Rivalry
EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- The Northwestern Wildcats are renewing their rivalry with Notre Dame starting in 2014.
The Wildcats haven't played the Fighting Irish since 1995. But on Nov. 15, 2014, they will head to South Bend, and Notre Dame will visit Ryan Field during the 2018 season.
The teams have played each other 47 times since their first meetup in 1889. But the schools have met only four times, between 1992 and 1995, since the 1976 season.
"We're excited about this series and having Notre Dame make its first visit to Evanston since 1976," NU athletic director Jim Phillips said in a news release. "Northwestern and Notre Dame represent two of the finest academic institutions in the nation, and it's only fitting that we renew our rivalry on the football field."
Northwestern has also secured some extra visiting team tickets for Wildcats fans for the 2014 game in South Bend.
The Wildcats won their last game against the Fighting Irish 17-15, on Sept. 2, 1995, during the season Northwestern went to the Rose Bowl under coach Gary Barnett.
