In a televised interview with "Good Morning America," runner Becky Roche says her mother, Beth Roche, was cheering for her near the finish line when the blasts occurred.
She suffered serious leg injuries. Roche says her mother is recovering from surgery to repair her knee cap and faces more operations.
Becky Roche had finished the race about a minute before the blasts and was not hurt.
The blasts killed three people and injured more than 170. A person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press Monday that the bombs were made of pressure cookers.
Becky Roche did not return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment Tuesday. A message was left at Beth Roche's home in Highland.
Becky Roche is a Highland High School graduate who holds a Ph.D. in pharmacy from Purdue University and is a medical information specialist at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in nearby Cambridge, Mass., the Times Of Northwest Indiana reports.
Her mother works for Audiology & Imaging Center in Munster, the Times reported.
