Northwest Indiana Motorist Has Close Call With Flying Semi-Truck Wheel
(CBS) – An Indiana motorist is grateful he walked away from an encounter with the flying wheel of a semi-tractor-trailer truck, which collided with his windshield early Friday.
As he looks at pictures he took of his totaled vehicle, Andrew Bruce of Hobart knows how close he came to death.
"I guess I was in the wrong place at the wrong time," he tells CBS 2's Mike Parker.
As he drove alone to work, west along 80-94 near the Burr exit in Gary, a huge tire from a big rig truck sailed through the air and slammed into his Subaru Impreza. It smashed through the windshield. Luckily, the worst damage was to the passenger side.
"If I had been going a little bit quicker, it very well could have been … we wouldn't be talking," he says.
According to Indiana State Police, he's lucky to be alive. It may be a cliché, but its appears to be true.
When his wife saw the wreckage, she says she was in shock.
"But he was okay and he was up and walking around," Dawn Bruce says.
State police aren't sure how the tire came off the truck. Neither the driver nor the truck were found.
