Northlake Man Gets 18 Years In Prison For Home Invasion
WHEATON (CBS) -- A west suburban man who pleaded guilty to breaking into a home and tying up the inhabitants in 2010 was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday.
Judge George Bakalis sentenced Jesus Hernandez, 36, of Northlake, to 18 years for breaking into a Lombard home in the fall of 2010. On Jan. 4, Hernandez pleaded guilty to one count of home invasion, according to a release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.
About 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 30, 2010, Hernandez, wearing a ski mask and armed with a BB gun, broke into the home of Anthony Gilio. who was home with his teenage daughter at the time.
Hernandez handcuffed Gilio's hands behind his back and ordered him to lie on the floor, then duct-taped the girls hands, the release said.
As Hernandez searched the house, Gilio's daughter was able to free herself and call 911. When he realized polices had been alerted, Hernandez fled, but was arrested later that day by Lombard police.
Hernandez must serve at least 50 percent of the sentence before he is eligible for parole. He was given credit for time served in the DuPage County Jail.
"Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home," State's Atty. Robert Berlin said the release. "Mr. Hernandez violated the sanctity of his victim's home and for that he will spend a significant amount of time behind bars."
