Northbrook Teen Charged With Bomb Threats
SKOKIE, Ill. (CBS) -- An 18-year-old Northbrook student was due in court Thursday, charged with threatening to bomb Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South high schools.
Ryan Ricco, of 3514 Whisperwoods Ct. in Northbrook, allegedly made the threats while chatting with another student Wednesday morning on Facebook, police said. The other student told police that Ricco threatened to bomb Glenbrook North High School or go to Glenbrook South High School with a bomb strapped to him.
Police notified officials at Glenbrook High School District 225 and officers searched both schools on Wednesday to find Ricco and check for explosives.
"You've got to treat it like it was real," Cmdr. Jeff Ader said. Police "took it seriously and picked him up within three hours of the threat."
District 225 had alerted key staff right away, including the district's Off-Campus program. Ader said when Ricco walked into the Off-Campus office at 1247 Waukegan Road, Glenview, around 11 a.m. Wednesday, staff there notified police and officers took him into custody.
Glenview police recovered fireworks taped together from Ricco's residence.
He was charged with felony disorderly conduct and illegal possession of fireworks.
"It was determined by police that the school environments at both schools were safe," Geddeis stated. "At no time were students or staff in danger."
