As Bill Kirkpatrick got off the 9:22 a.m. Metra train at Union Station, he was met by Discover chief executive David Nelms, who informed him he had won the grand prize - $1 million dollars in the credit card company's second annual sweepstakes.
Kirkpatrick wasn't totally surprised. He had received a letter about a month ago, telling him he was a winner.
"Actually, we didn't know for sure what we won, officially, until now. Discover wasn't telling us officially, although I knew there was the contest, so I knew there was only, like, two prizes that it could be, and we were just hoping for the best," Kirkpatrick said.
Kirkpatrick says he will use the money to plan for his 14-year-old son's college education, but has no plans to retire from his job as e-commerce manager for Walgreens.com. He says he enjoys it too much.
