North Suburban Y Sells Christmas Trees For Needy Families

(CBS) -- Looking for a Christmas tree? The second annual Tree Sale fundraiser is up and running at the North Suburban YMCA in Northbook.

"Every year, we have an end of the year campaign," said Barb Flanagin, vice president of development at North Suburban YMCA. "Last year, we started the tree lot and we work with a local man who supplies the trees. It's an old fashioned tree lot, with volunteers, old big bulbs, with big trees and everyone could feel the spirit of Christmas."

Flanagin says all proceeds go toward programs for needy families at the Y.

"The money goes toward helping those who can't afford to be part of the Y's membership, after school care, sports, someone lost his job," she said. "We typically help about 2,000 people are year and about $500,000 of financial assistance is distributed."

One out of five Y participants receives some level of assistance from the Y.

The tree lot will also feature special events, including a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus on December 5 and a community caroling party on December 13.

"We have holiday music, hot chocolate, it's very family friendly," Flanagin said. "It's the experience that is special."

Flanagin says it's a tree lot with a cause.

"The trees that you're going to get from us do something," she said. "They are vehicle for us to be able to provide for families who can't afford membership or services from the Y. We tell you about it when you come. We tell you about who you're helping by buying a tree from our lot."

Flanigan says the goal this year is to raise $4,000 for local programs.

"When you purchase a tree at the Y, you're helping to send kids to camp, provide enrichment classes, and support healthy lifestyles," said Howard Schultz, NSYMCA president/CEO. "That's a great thing to remember while you enjoy a beautiful tree in your home through the holiday season."

"We had 200 trees delivered and I hope to sell them out. You'll feel good when you leave our tree lot," said Flanigan.

The North Suburban YMCA has 22,000 participants, and serves 15 communities.
