Rogers Park Deli Closed For Rat, Mice Infestation

CHICAGO (CBS) - City officials have shut down a Rogers Park neighborhood restaurant, after inspectors discovered the basement was full of mice and rats.
A favorable review from "Time Out Chicago" is posted in the windowpane at Sahara Kabob-Big Buns and Pita deli, 6649 N. Clark St. But on the glass door just to the right now appears the ominous bright green adhesive sign reading, "license suspended."
Inspectors from Mayor Daley's Dumpster Task Force found more than 150 mice droppings and 50 rat droppings, along with a couple of live cockroaches.
There was no certified food manager on the premises, the grease disposal container had not been maintained properly, and it appeared someone had been smoking cigarettes in the basement, a news release said.
Inspectors promptly shut down the restaurant for the critical violation of inadequate pest control. The restaurant cannot reopen until they prove to the Task Force that they have corrected all of their problems and revamped their pest control and housekeeping regimes.
"When an establishment has this many types of pests it's a sign that management really let conditions get out of control," said Josie Cruz, Deputy Commissioner of Streets & Sanitation's Bureau of Rodent Control, which operates the Mayor's Dumpster Task Force.
