None Hurt After 2 Fires At Kenwood Building
CHICAGO (CBS) -- No one was hurt after two fires broke out at the same apartment building in the Kenwood neighborhood on Saturday.
The first fire started at about 7:15 a.m. at a 3-story apartment building at 4458 S. Greenwood Ave., according to a Fire Department spokesman.
No one was hurt, but as workers were boarding up the building about 10 a.m., they noticed another fire had started in the building's basement.
"It was the same fire,'' according to a Prairie District police lieutenant who said the first fire apparently "rekindled.''
Crews rushed to the scene again and the found the fire had spread a little bit to the first floor, according to Rosado. They extinguished the second fire about 11 a.m., according to Rosado.
The blaze rendered the basement residence uninhabitable.
A family of six was displaced, but they have family they can stay with so the city's Dept. of Human Services did not have to be contacted, according to the lieutenant.
Rosado said no one was rescued and there were smoke detectors in the newer building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Rosado who said about 30 firefighters responded to the scene.
