No Bond For Man Charged With Killing Man For Cell Phone In Lakeview
(CBS) -- The suspect accused of killing a man for his mobile phone faced a judge for the first time.
Prosecutors revealed how they think the robbery-turned murder happened, reports CBS 2's Derrick Blakley.
22-year-old Kristopher Pitts, charged with murder and held without bond, leaving his wife, a mother of three, simply stunned.
"This doesn't sound like him," said Cassandra Gunter-Pitts. "I never even thought this would even happen."
Around 2 a.m. Saturday, near Oakdale and Mildred Avenue, prosecutors say Pitts apparently robbed Kevin O'Malley of his cellphone and cash.
"I just know. I don't like what I heard. You don't like anything I heard," Gunter-Pitts said.
When O'Malley chased Pitts to try yo get them back, Pitts allegedly shot O'Malley twice in the chest.
Police arrested Pitts on a nearby "L" platform, which security video allegedly shows he accessed from a nearby rooftop.
Police say they found O'Malley's cellphone in Pitts' pocket. Three witnesses allegedly identified him in a lineup and none of that makes one bit of sense to the wife who thought she knew him.
"That's my husband, Gunter-Pitts said. "I love him. I have no idea what's going on."
Pitts and his family live in Humboldt Park. He was already out on bond for charges of aggravated assault of a police offer.
He had allegedly threatened officers with a dog and a machete as they were responding to a call.
