No Bail For Men Charged With Halloween Shooting Of 10-Year-Old
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Bond was denied Wednesday for two street gang members from the Albany Park neighborhood, accused of shooting a 10-year-old boy on Halloween after chasing and shooting at a group of trick-or-treaters they thought were rival gang members.
Cruz Perez, 22, and Steven Figueroa, 18, are charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, police said. Perez was also charged on a parole violation warrant.
The 10-year-old victim was walking with several other people trick-or-treating just before 10 p.m. in the 4700 block of North Sacramento Avenue when Perez and Figueroa confronted the group, mistakenly thinking they were rival gang members, and chased them, opening fire, police said.
The 10-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital, where police said he was in good condition.
Perez, of the 3800 block of West Foster, and Figueroa, of the 3000 block of West Gunnison, were positively identified in police lineups.
Both were ordered held without bond on Wednesday and a preliminary hearing was set for Nov. 7 in Northwest Felony Court (Br. 50), Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.
Prosecutors said Cruz was the shooter. He fired eight to 12 times, hitting the 10-year-old victim once in the thigh.
