Niles Honors 3 Employees Who Saved Bicyclist From Flood Waters
"This guy was in trouble."
Peter Arvanitis and his fellow Village of Niles employees, Mike Reid and Tony Dati, were putting out sandbags - and they noticed a bicyclist struggling as he tried to ride through the floodwater on Harts Road near the North Branch of the Chicago River.
Arvanitis says the water was up to the man's neck.
Arvanitis and his two co-workers went in. And they tried to get the bicyclist out.
"I think he panicked. He just wouldn't let go. I'm like, 'You gotta let go of the bike!'
"So he finally let go of the bike, and we got him out."
The Village of Niles is giving all three village employees certificates that commend them for putting their own safety at risk and demonstrating great courage.
