Student Injured By Discus At New Trier Track Meet
WINNETKA, Ill. (STMW)-- An Evanston Township High School track athlete was hospitalized after he was struck by a discus at a meet and fell unconscious Friday.
Linval Rose, 14, was hit in the face with an errant discus at the Central Suburban League Invitational Friday at New Trier High School in Winnetka.
Rose, 14, was transported to Evanston Hospital where he was in good condition Friday night. Rose was warming up off to the side, talking with teammate Josh Montgomery, when the discus thrown by a student competing in the meet struck him, Montgomery said.
Rose hit the ground "in shock,'' said Mike Leaks, an assistant coach for Niles West.
"He went unconscious," Leaks said. "I learned his name and called his name, and he regained consciousness."
Rose went in and out of consciousness several times before paramedics arrived, Leaks said, and "he was bleeding from a cut on the left side of his nose."
When paramedics arrived, they questioned Rose.
"He knew his name and his age, but he didn't know where he was or what day it was," Leaks said.
Rose had already run 100 meters in the 4-by-100 relay race, Evanston coach Dan Michelin said. He was scheduled to compete in the 400-meter, which was the final race of the day.
He remained at Evanston Hospital as of 9 p.m. Friday, where he was in good condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
His teammates ended up winning the meet — and dedicated the victory to Rose. "We won this for him," junior Victor Bordo said.
