New Target Store May Be Coming To Cabrini Site

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A new Target store may be coming to the former site one of the many high-rises in the Cabrini-Green public housing development.

Chicago Housing Authority representatives said Target Corp. is in land-swap talks with the agency, which are expected to result in a new Target store at the northwest corner of Division and Larrabee streets.

A Target spokeswoman would say only that "we're always looking for the right opportunities" to open new stores.

The deal calls for Target to swap a parcel of land equal in value with the CHA, which would build new public housing in the same neighborhood, CHA spokesman Matt Aguilar said.

Target also agreed to hire 75 CHA residents at the new store, Aguilar said. A typical Target superstore employs about 500, but a new and smaller urban format such as one slated to open in the former Carson Pirie Scott & Co. building in the Loop will employ 200.

No one could comment the size of the planned Target store, which would be on 5 acres, on a site where the William Green Homes once housed residents. The William Green Homes were the white concrete high-rises clustered north of Division Street.

The last remaining high-rise building at the Green Homes, at 1230 N. Burling St., is set to be demolished starting this week.

Cabrini-Green used to stretch from Evergreen Avenue on the north to Chicago Avenue on the south, and from the CTA Brown-Purple Line tracks on the east to Halsted Street on the west. It included eight William Green Homes high-rises that were completed in 1962, and 15 red-brick mid- and high-rise buildings south of Division Street called the Cabrini Extension, which were completed in 1958.

But now, all that remain are the Frances Cabrini Rowhouses in the southwest corner of the development, which date from 1942.
