New Schaumburg Minor League Baseball Team Still Has No Name
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (CBS) -- A new baseball team is coming to Schaumburg to replace the Flyers, but the team still needs a name.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, the minor league baseball season in Schaumburg was canceled this year, when the Flyers were evicted from Alexian Field.
The team, which had occupied the stadium since 1998, owed more than $900,000 in back rent.
On Tuesday, Schaumburg village officials signed an operating agreement with the owners of a still-unnamed baseball team that will begin playing at the stadium, at 1999 S. Springsguth Rd., next spring.
The agreement became official just before the deadline Friday in a contest to name the team, the Daily Herald reported.
The newspaper listed several suggestions that have been raised for a team name – the Schaumburg Airmen, Athletics, Aviators, Dingers, Elite, Flight, Flys, 41s, Rookies and Sky Hawks.
The 41s are a reference to the fact that Schaumburg Township was once known as Township 41, while other suggested names refer to the proximity between Alexian Field and Schaumburg Regional Airport, the Daily Herald reported.
And CBS 2's Jim Williams also suggested the Schaumburg Malls, given the presence of Woodfield Mall and numerous other shopping centers in the far northwest suburb.
