New Lenox To Mail Out Property Tax Rebate Checks

NEW LENOX, Ill. (CBS) -- One Chicago suburb is giving money back to its taxpayers.

WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports the village of New Lenox in Will County will be mailing out rebate checks next week to about 5,500 property owners.

Mayor Tim Baldermann said it's the second year of the rebate program. Last year, the town returned 40 percent of the city's share of the property tax.
"This year, we've looked at it, and felt we were able to give back 50 percent." Baldermann said. "We run very efficiently in New Lenox. We've always tried to be conservative with our money, and we want to give the people back as much of it as we can. It's their money."

Baldermann said New Lenox also is eliminating the fee for vehicle stickers and pet tags, and has signed up for a program that saves residents an average of around $200 a year on their electric bills.

"Government is not supposed to be a money-making machine. It's supposed to just take enough revenue to operate efficiently, and that's what we've been able to do," he said.
