Sheriff's police say that Kristina encountered her killer on a well-traveled path on July 21, 1985, moments after buying a candy bar and a soda in a supermarket at Butterfield Road and Route 53 in unincorporated Glen Ellyn.
The attacker raped and repeatedly stabbed Kristina. Sheriff's deputies found her body the next morning in a field near the path.
Police have followed a number of leads over the years, but all have proven to be dead ends until now.
Kristina's mother, Sandy, is expected to join police at the news conference, at the DuPage County office complex, in Wheaton.
Police are not expected to announce charges in the case.
