New Law Allows Buses To Drive In I-55 Shoulder

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Don't be surprised when you see Pace buses driving along the shoulder of the Stevenson Expy. this fall.

Governor Pat Quinn has signed legislation that will allow the buses to use the lanes in hopes of reducing travel times on the busy I-55 corridor.

Officials also hope the move will improve the reliability of bus schedules and help the environment by encouraging more motorists to use mass transit.

This fall, a two-year program will allow Pace routes 755 and 855, which connect the southwest suburbs, downtown Chicago and the Illinois Medical District, to operate on the inside shoulders between Interstate 355 and Kedzie Avenue.

The shoulder-riding will be permitted during the inbound morning and outbound afternoon commuting times
