New Book Slams, Mocks Retired Mayor Daley

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A new book critical of retired Mayor Richard M. Daley aims to make sure the former mayor is remembered for more than the good things he did while in office.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Nancy Harty reports, the book is titled Mayor Culpa: Gone, but Not Forgiven.

Author Mark Weinberg spoke about the book with Chicago Sun-Times reporter Mark Konkol. He called it nothing but an amusing picturebook, with a collection of clever images that are pointedly suggestive of Daley's misrule over 22 years.

The Sun-Times lays out some of the book's best lines, including, "Daley '89: Everything Sounds Better with 'Um,'" and "Sure I flunked the bar exam twice…. It was in English."

The Web site for the book features has mock quotes praising the volume.

"I enjoyed reading this book immensely. I could not put it down. I read it cover-to-cover in one eight-hour sitting. In my truck. While I was supposed to be working," reads a mock quote from an "anonymous Chicago Streets and Sanitation worker."

"If you burn only one book this year, make it 'Mayor Culpa,'" reads a quote purported to be from Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who became infamous for staging as burning of the Quran.

Weinberg is a Chicago attorney who used to edit a hockey magazine called "The Blue Line," and slammed late Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz in the book Career Misconduct.

He has also sued the city multiple times – including after being arrested for trying to sell his book on Wirtz outside the United Center, the Sun-Times reported.

He has also sued on behalf of panhandlers who were arrested and ticketed in violation of their rights to free speech, and is still regularly filing lawsuits alleging brutality and excessive force by Chicago Police officers, the newspaper reported.
