Another Chicago area suburb invites Bears to build new stadium
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Yet another Chicago suburb has invited the Bears to build their new stadium within its borders.
Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon wrote a letter to the team asking them to consider Country Club Hills.
Gordon argued the site is strategically located near three major highways and a Metra station and she said a new stadium would bring major economic impact to an area that is often ignored.
While the team purchased the former Arlington International Racecourse property and began demolition earlier this year, Bears CEO Kevin Warren said the franchise and the village hit a "stalemate" over taxing issues.
Since the Bears bought the old Arlington Park in February for just under $200 million, Naperville and Waukegan have entered the discussion on housing the new stadium. The Bears have met with officials from Naperville to discuss their pitch for a possible stadium. Meantime, leaders in Rockford also have thrown their hat in the ring, although there have been no formal talks.
Still, Mayor Brandon Johnson has signaled there could still be the possibility of the Bears remaining in Chicago as he and Warren have had discussions.
