New Archbishop Not Sure He'll Live In Church's Mansion
(CBS) -- Chicago's next archbishop isn't ruling out the possibility he will not resident in Archdiocese's opulent residence in Lincoln Park.
Spokane, Wash. Bishop Blase Cupich, selected by Pope Francis to take over the Chicago Archdiocese later this year, was in the north suburbs Monday.
The current Cardinal's residence at State and North in the upscale Gold Coast has hosted Pope John Paul II and President Franklin Roosevelt.
Cupich has stayed there already and calls it a lovely home. But he may not choose to live here.
In Spokane, he lives in a modest one-bedroom apartment in a seminary.
"Wherever I live, I want to have a place where I can get some rest and feel the support of people who are around me. At the same time I would have to say I'm going to take my time to make that decision and to see where I can live to be most effective," Cupich told reporters in Lincolnshire.
He added: "As you say in television land, stay tuned."
The Pope has become known for being more modest than some of his predecessors. Some wonder if Cupich will follow that lead.
The new archbishop has decided one thing.
"I'm going to love this city," he said.
Cupich will replace Francis Cardinal George in November.
