The IRS has more than $4 million in refund checks that have been returned as undeliverable. The money is owed to more than 3,600 Illinois taxpayers.
Nationwide, a total of 111,893 taxpayers are due one or more refund checks.
Illinois IRS spokeswoman Sue Hales said the average undelivered refund is about $1,100.
Hales says all the IRS needs is an updated address so the checks can be reissued.
"We want to make sure taxpayers get the money owed to them," IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said in a news release. "If you think you are missing a refund, the sooner you update your address information, the quicker you can get your money."
The IRS says people can avoid delivery problems by having the money directly deposited into their bank accounts.
Taxpayers can check to see if the IRS owes them cash by visiting www.irs.gov and clicking on the "Where's My Refund'' link.
The public is reminded that the IRS does not contact taxpayers by e-mail about their pending refunds, and that if you do get such an e-mail, it is likely an identity theft scam. Taxpayers are advised not to release personal information, open attachments, or click on links in suspicious e-mails.
