New 606 Trail Proves Popular; But Some Complain Of Crime, Rowdy Behavior
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The new elevated 606 trail on the city's West Side has proved very popular with joggers and cyclists who have given it rave reviews, but it's also generated several complaints from residents about gang activity and drunken behavior.
Most residents living near The 606, also known as the Bloomingdale Trail, seemed to like the idea of the elevated running and cycling path, but they want more police in the area.
Jennifer, who lives along The 606, said when there was no way to get to the elevated abandoned rail line before it was transformed into a trail and park, crime wasn't a big problem, but now she hears a lot more gunshots these days, and doesn't feel safe.
"But now since there's openings everywhere, the gangbangers like to be up there, and stuff," she said. "I don't think it's safe for the kids up there."

She also said there's often rowdy behavior from drunk people using the trail.
Jennifer and other local residents have complained about more crowds, high-intensity lights along the trail, and plenty of noise from children and teens who use The 606.
"I would say more like skateboarder kids, yeah. Sometimes some fights," said Chelsea, who has lived along the trail since May.
She said she's willing to give it more time, but other residents say more police patrols are needed along the trail.
At a recent Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy meeting, one woman complained about kids urinating off the trail, and onto her lawn. The 3-mile trail has no permanent bathrooms or portable toilets.
