Neighbors In Summit Hit With Vandalism, Graffiti

SUMMIT, Ill. (CBS) -- A neighborhood in southwest suburban Summit woke up Monday morning to find homes covered in graffiti and cars smashed with bricks, and now police say they have two men in custody.

As WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports, the vandalism happened in the 7300 blocks of 55th Place and Archer Avenue.

"It was a pretty crazy morning to wake up to," said a neighbor, Julian, who did not want his full name used.

Julian walked outside to discover his family's swing set was missing, along with his fire pit. Elsewhere in the neighborhood, "Nazi" was written on a door, and "white power" on a wall.

A neighbor's statues were defaced, and the windshields of two cars were smashed with bricks.

Neighbor Benjamin Ortiz's yard statues were vandalized.

"Sometimes it makes you wonder," Ortiz tells CBS 2's Marissa Bailey. "They make you wonder what could be next."

Police say two men have been arrested and the case is under investigation.

Summit police Chief Les Peterson says charges are expected later against the two men, charges of criminal damage to property and theft.

Summit police Detective David Seaquist says the graffiti and vandalism was confined to one area of the village.
