Nearly 55 Pounds Of Pot Seized By Police
CHICAGO (STMW) - Chicago Police seized about 55 pounds of cannabis and other drugs with an estimated value of more than $450,000 in two busts on Monday, one near Union Station in the West Loop and one on the Southwest Side.
Genio Carpenter, 23, of Vallejo, Calif, was charged with one felony count of possession of cannabis over 5,000 grams after officers were informed of suspicious activity in the 200 block of South Canal Street, a release from police News Affairs said.
Narcotics Unit officers learned of two suspicious suitcases on the block and discovered a strong smell of cannabis coming from the luggage, the release said. Further investigation revealed the suitcases had about 19 pounds of cannabis inside, with an approximate street value of more than $137,000.
Carpenter was arrested and charged.
In an unrelated case on Monday, Narcotics Unit officers seized 35 pounds of cannabis in the 3000 bock of West 36th Street after receiving information of suspicious freight at a warehouse, the release said.
With the help of a police canine, officers found a positive presence of narcotics.
Officers obtained a search warrant and found marijuana hidden in the warehouse. A total of 35 pounds of pot, valued at $251,000, and 648 grams of heroin, with a street value of more than $64,000, were seized, the release said.
The Narcotics Unit continues to investigate both cases.
